Review/Comment
High atop a corporate office building, two men, one white, one black, seek harmony in their high-pressure world. When their simmering prejudices need venting, they resort to a corporate-approved solution'that lets them speak their minds without fear of reprisal. Meanwhile, in a story inspired by recent real-life tragedy, a young writer imagines the long conversation between a dying white man who lies embedded in a car windshield and the black woman who is trying desperately not to let this distraction ruin her celebration of Flag Day. Flag Day, by Lee Blessing, is an exploration of black-white relations in America through dark comedy, and sometimes surreal and abstract theatrical devices.

"Provocative theater"

A rare opportunity for people in the South Bay to experience a biting racial, political debate in a theatrical setting.

A powerful, intense evening of top-quality theater. I hope to return on a talk-back night, because I'm still mulling over many of the issues raised in the script, and am curious to hear what other people think. Overall, the strongest aspect of this production was that it made me really look at these issues of race from different perspectives. Every character was played with such conviction that I could see through his or her eyes. Collapse

"Really funny, but kinda shocking"

My boyfriend and I talked about it for at least half an hour, and then again this morning. The second piece really sticks with you.

I know as director it's not kosher to neccessarily review a show, but it's worth it for the content of the show alone. The acting is great yes, the space and set are super as well, but this play deals with tough topics of racism is an entertaining, funny way. It's dark comedy at it's finest, and with race in the news more and more in regards to the preseidential election this is a great way to start discussions. You'll laugh, you may gasp, and the language isn't entirely suitable to say in front of your kids or grandmother, but this is edgy stuff that will surely evoke thoughts! Wine and Beer sold in the theatre, and the theatre runs warm so come prepared. Collapse

I saw the preview peformance, and couldn't stop laughing. And then wondered why I was laughing so hard and what it meant. Blessing brings what's under the surface of racism to light with gut-wrenching, wickedly funny humor. This doesn't just re-tread tired ideas, it opens them up in whole new ways. Doesn't matter if you are Black, White, Asian, or Latino, you should check this one out. Collapse
