British Technician Looking for Theatre Work

    Date Posted: 09/08/08
    Organization:
    City: Bay Area

    Description:

    Hello there,

I would like to start by introducing myself. My name is Malcolm Stephen I am 28 years old and a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Scotland. Since my graduation in 2002 I have worked extensively in theatres across the UK, most recently with English National Opera in London. Currently though, I have a new goal. It is my wish to live and work in the US to further my career in theatre and learn new skills, techniques and working practices. Having spent some time in the bay area and sampled what it has to offer in terms of living standard, opportunities for me as a young professional and its dedication to the performing arts, I am very keen to experience more. I found the whole area very exciting and made many friends in my time there.

In order to work in the country I will be applying for the J1 Arts Training and Internship VISA. This gives graduates with working experience the chance to live and learn in the United States. By doing so they can better themselves, gain new expertise and also share their knowledge of their chosen field to their new employers and hopefully enhance the company that they work for. It seems like a great way for both parties to grow and to develop new and more effective working practices. The VISA requires little work from the employer other than a job offer and they would not need to sponsor me. I can give you more information on the VISA if you are interested.

I have gained a great practical knowledge during my time in theatre, not least than when I was at college. I attended a fantastic course, which was as varied and challenging as it was fun and exciting. I learned to work well on my own or as a member or leader of a team. I was often responsible for managing my own time and schedule, designing and rigging my own shows or taking responsibility for running shows as a Stage Manager, Production Manager, Production Electrician or Technical Stage Manager. It gave me the best possible start in my career and only increased my thirst for learning new skills. This is why I would like to work abroad, in a new environment learning new so I can become the best that I can be.

I am well experienced in most backstage roles and would happily consider any position, as I am certain I can learn new things even in the areas that I am best versed in. I am a very keen carpenter and although my experience is limited to the scenery I built in college, I have kept my hand in by building my own furniture and also in joinery required in my current line of work. I do however see myself progressing onto Production Management as my career develops so to learn more in any backstage area can only help in this pursuit.

I will email a copy of my resume to any interested parties.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Malcolm Stephen
