Since its premiere in 1988, Smoke on the Mountain has become the second most produced musical in regional theatres, after Pump Boys and Dinettes proving that a Broadway run is not required for theatre success. Additionally, it has been performed in New Zealand, England, Ireland and Canada. No one expected Smoke to become universally popular. Producer Alan Bailey and writer Connie Ray created a musical comedy about a family of gospel singers in economically depressed 1938, a little family feudin' along with keeping the faith in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church somewhere in the North Carolina hills. "When it played in New York, most of the audience had never been to a church like this. They saw it as something new," Bailey explains. "But now, in the regional theatre setting, the primary appeal is to people most like the audience in the play's church." In Smoke on the Mountain, young Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders Family Singers to provide an “upliftin’ evening of singin’ and witnessin’” for his very staid flock. What he and the church get is a surprising evening of wonderful and rousing music and more than two dozen songs, many of them vintage Gospel and bluegrass favorites like Church in the Wildwood, Wonderful Time Up There, and I'll Fly Away, mixed in with hilarious stories from the more or less devout members of the Sanders family. The audience is invited to pull up a pew and join in the rollicking good time. Audiences of all ages will leave this richly entertaining evening clapping, singing, laughing and cheering.
