Amidst the art deco splendor of Cole Porter's New York, Molière's brilliant farce gets a hilarious jolt of champagne wit and jazz age dazzle. When a debonair heartthrob proposes to his high-society sweetie, he soon discovers that Mama has another beau in mind, a gold-digging poet as pompous as he is pedantic. In this enormously clever satire of upper-crust extravagance who knows whether reason, greed, or true love will prevail?

TheatreWorks has had many excellent productions in the past, but this one was not one of them. The premise of the play has potential in dealing with the upper class extravagances and culture clashes in the depression era. However, the entire play is written in a Dr. Seuss rhyming style. Though unlike Dr. Seuss, the cadence and rhymes are noticeably forced and became quite annoying after about 10 minutes. At that point, I just wanted to smack the characters and tell them to start talking like adults. The pace moved slowly as the dialog was forced into rhyming silliness even when trying to make dramatic points. The intermission did provide a convenient exit for an early return home. Collapse

This show is beautiful to look at! They have really outdone themselves from the design perspective to be sure. The Art deco set is jaw dropping, and the lighting and costumes made me drool. The sound design and staging are highly entertaining as well. My problem lay not in the expression of the actors which was perfect, but the pacing and delivery of this updated, but still in rhyming verse adaptation of Moliere's original. The script and satire are brillant, very well written, but the cadence is forced in many places by the actors as are the rhymes, and two hours of quick complex verse had even a moliere fanatic zoning out a bit in the second act. Be ready to pay attention, come to the show refreshed, this is a production worth seeing, but do it justice by being mentally prepared for the art that it is. Collapse
