Based on the real life adventures of the English widow Anna Leonowens, The King and I is a glorious and unconventional romance. Set in 1860’s exotic Bangkok, this Tony® Award-winning musical features ornate sets, costumes and a dazzling score by Rodgers and Hammerstein that will thrill audiences young and old. Memorable songs include: Hello, Young Lovers, I Whistle A Happy Tune, Shall We Dance? and Getting To Know You. American Musical Theatre of San Jose produces this stunningly opulent production with a large local cast led by recording star, Debby Boone. The Desert Sun in Arizona praised Ms. Boone’s performance saying, “she sings her Anna as if she was born into it.” We know you will agree.

Over the years I have seen and/or performed in so many productions of The King and I that I was almost dreading seeing it one more time. Luckily, I did see it one more time because this production was a knockout. The acting, dancing, and singing were excellent, the sets and costumes opulent and wonderful, and I was entranced even though I knew every line and note of music by heart. Francis Jue especially was mesmerizing in his portrayal of the king, and Debbie Boone's acting was a wonderful surprise. I am so tired of seeing "big names" in shows to sell tickets who are totally outperformed by the rest of the cast. Not this time! The only letdown was the prince whose acting chops weren't up to the part, but all the other leads were outstanding. AMT proved it can produce just as fine, if not better, a show as any national tour! Collapse

Maybe I'm spoiled but here's a company that has a huge budget in comparison to tons of other groups and the city just gave them a bunch more and they put this on stage. I just didn't buy the inconsistant direction/staging generally weak acting and unimpressive "spectacle". The orchestra was amazing, true, and the "Uncle Tom" Dance was entertaining and certainly remined me of Thailand, but aside from a few decent performances (Irene Trapp in particular) I was unimpressed. No chemisty between Anna and the King, for all the rave about the sets and costumes, with the exception of one night scene I wasn't thrilled. Sure the voices were good but again, I guess I expected more for the price of the ticket. There are WAY more talented children in this valley that could have carried the larger speaking roles in my opinion. Applauding for Debbie Boon for just walking on is beyond me, and a standing ovation is embarrasing to be honest. Better luck next time. Collapse

This production has such gorgeous sets that you could watch it without sound and still enjoy it. But then you'd miss Francis Jue's delicious acting and his fantastic chemistry with Debby Boone. Boone's voice lacks strength, but her layered performance as Anna is spot-on. A real stand-out was Irene Trapp as Lady Thiang. Her comic timing is subtle and flawless, and her voice is gorgeous: lovely range and perfect control and vibrato. I wanted to hear more. Collapse

Saw this show last night at AMTSJ and very much enjoyed it. The sets, lighting, and costumes are AMAZING. My companion and I had an intake of breath at each scene change. Francis Jue as the King did a fantasic job. Debby Boone as Anna actually really surprised me with how well she acted the part. She was very true to the character and the production. Her voice sounded a little tired last night, but I thought overall she did a great job with the role. The ensemble did a fine job - a standout was the actress who played Lady Tiang - wonderful voice. There were a couple of wooden acting moments from some of the supporting characters, but maybe it was an off night for them. The other main reason to see this show is the music, with the orchestra led by Barbara Day Turner. I didn't hear one wrong note in the entire show, and the way the sound surrounded us was exceptional. What wasn't cool was the people around us who brought noisy bags of chips into the theatre. Please people! Rant mode off - A wonderful local production by AMTSJ, and well worth the price of admission! Collapse
