Mixed media artists Karen Chew and Tess Sinclair explore the subtleties of life in a sometimes playful, sometimes dark show titled Exposed: Uncovering Beauty, Myths, and a Few Lies. The show’s title emerged from a lively dialogue between the artists, Chew said. “We were talking about what our art reveals about ourselves, whether by conscious choice or a glimpse of our true self. We are affected by all of what surrounds us – current news and politics, culture, social norms and nuances, friends and family – and this often translates through our hands into our art.” While the inspiration for the work comes to the artists in different ways, the art has a common thread. “All art in some way exposes the artist,” said Sinclair. “The artist invites judgments, critiques, possible misinterpretations by the public and even the wrath of the viewer when sensitive or controversial subjects are the basis for their work. Naming the exposure and therefore the risks inherent in any public show is focusing on a reality that may otherwise fall under the radar. It alerts the viewers that some work may exist outside their personal comfort zones.” Their current work focuses on exposing their lives, culture, and observations through assemblages, collages, painting, jewelry, flea market finds, antiques, and vintage treasures, plus personal trinkets that are interwoven into new forms and new memories.
