The 1987 hit movie bursts onstage in this vibrant, funny and touching musical. When frustrated adolescent Josh Baskin wishes he were "big" and wakes up the next morning a 30-year-old man, he discovers there's much more to being an adult than he's bargained for – and learns we must all grow up at our own pace, in our own time. A witty, moving, insightful book by John Weidman and a dazzling, energetic, heartfelt, contemporary score by David Shire and Richard Maltby, Jr. makes this already classic motion picture fantasy an unforgettable theatrical experience. Fresh, up-to-date, relevant, and featuring one of the most irresistible leading male roles ever, Big, The Musical holds universal appeal for audiences of all ages.

Fabulous production, but it needed a bit more "setting up." I love Hillbarn, and I love the musicals like Smokey Joe's. I think there were too many songs too fast. Sure, if you know the history of Rooney and Garland because you lived it, then it is grand. If you do not, it would help to have a short introductory narrative explaining where/when each song originated so the audience gainsed some historical perspective. Fabulous ensemble with the piano, drum and bass. Collapse

I was astonished at the quality of this delightful musical journey. The imaginative staging and choreography kept my eyes riveted to the stage as I enjoyed the familiar tunes. Arielle Fishman, fresh from her appearance in The Fantastiks, shows considerable rising star singing and dancing talent for a fifteen-year-old. All six performers are first-rate and the three-piece combo never missed a note. And I could hear it all due to John Kowtko's excellent sound design. Highly recommended for nostalgia buffs. Collapse

I saw the Preview of this new review style show tonight and loved it. If you like great music and Judy Garland, then you must see this show. I am going bcak to see it again, it is that good. The visual design of the show is something i have never seen before and would have not expected. Like a scrapbook of Judy and mickey Roony's carrers and life on stage and film. Really well done! This 1900's drama proves that not many can be immune when money is the subject matter. When the play starts it is a bit vague and you wander what is really wrong with this seamingly idylic family - but everybody's motives and secret hatreds are revealed slowly during the play. The stage was arranged beautifully, the costumes were exquisite, and most of the time everybody had a perfect southern accent (although at times it was either overdone, or lost). "Birdie" was very good, as was "Cal" in his short appearance. "Oscar" seems like a very good actor that started a bit off when we attended, but he got better as the play advanced. Hilbarn is a cozy theatre, and this adds to the charm of the play - when you are able to witness this distorted family at its worst. Collapse

I saw the show on Friday night last week and loved it. The cast is quite good-especially considering that this is Community Theater and the actors and actresses are not paid. They should be. I saw 'Fantastics' in NY last year and this production could rival even the New York company I saw. Joe Duffy as director of the play did wonderful job combining realism and fantasy throughout the entire show. There is a lot of rhyming and poetic moments in the play and the cast delivers all of it with ease and beauty. If you haven't seen it yet, go now. It is closing in a week. Collapse

I didn't love the show, but it's worth every second to see Loisa played by Arielle Fishman. I kept rereading my program because I couldn't believe she's only 15. Her voice is unforgettable, in the category of Bernadette Peters and her stage presence is captivating. She won't be a local girl for long. Collapse

I have been to Hillbarn many times to see the shows and have seen The Fantasticks seven times in my lifetime. This is the best production I have ever seen (and may be one of the best shows Hillbarn has ever presented.) If you get the chance, I would suggest ggetting in now to see it. It runs only this month. The cast, like the show, is very diverse and play their parts wonderfully. I have seen almost every show that Director Joe Duffy has worked on in recent years and his direction of this show is precise, cutting, yet very delicate and pays beautiful homage to the original production with added scenic elements and a female mute that is gorgeous. The Girl, played by Arielle Fishman should be on Brroadway. She is amazing in this role and has an amazing voice! Go see the Fantasticks! Collapse

My family and I went to go see this show and we were all very entertained. My husband and I were so happy that there was a show that we could bring our children to where they could have fun and we could be entertained. It was particularly fun for me because I remember a lot of the songs. The actors were very good and had a lot of energy. The singing and dancing made this cast of young adults look like true professionals. If you have older parents or younger children this is the perfect show to go see. It will entertain all ages. This is a really great show with a lot of very talented actors, singers and dancers. It was a solid cast who kept me fixated on their performances the whole show and I say "GO See Smokey Joes Cafe!" Courtney Iventosch's "Falling" is sweetly sung and moving, Victoria Morgan's "Don Juan" is sassy and shows that she's a power house blowing you away, Cassie Blake's "Hound Dog" is fun and engaging, Erin Sjostrom's "Pearls a singer"is perfect for her look and rockin' voice, David Martin serenade's us with "Spanish Harlem", Gary Stanford, Jr. is a riot during Little Egypt (one of my favorite songs of the night) Justin Torres blows the audience away with his rock'n'roll voice in "Jailhouse Rock", Kevin Stanford brings the audience to tears with his comedic "Treat Me Nice" and the band was great. Overall, I was, again so impressed the first time I saw it, that I had to go see the show again. I recommend that if you love Great theatre,...GO SEE THIS SHOW! Trust me, you wont be disappointed.
