On September 24, 2006, Northside neighborhood in San Jose will open its doors for the first time to six of its beautifully restored homes: two turn-of-the-century Victorians (including a 1893 replica of the Steinbeck house), an early century Mediterranean bungalow, two early century Craftsmans, and a small cottage being completely restored using ecologically-friendly, environmentally-friendly, socially-conscious and reclaimed materials. This inaugural home tour for Northside has three purposes: to encourage additional Northside residents to choose restoration over remodeling; to introduce those outside of the neighborhood to the beauty of Northside; and to raise money for an Architectural Restoration Resource section to be added to the neighborhood library being built. Amidst rising interest rates and ownership affordability rates, this hidden-but-not-forgotten enclave in Silicon Valley offers beauty, culture, community and a preserved way of life.
