On the night before President Nixon’s 1974 resignation, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger arrives at the White House prepared to find Nixon ready to resign. What follows is a riotous romp as Nixon and Kissinger obsess about their places in history. In a wickedly funny sparring match, Nixon and Kissinger relive historical events as they superbly role-play Brezhnev, Chairman Mao and JFK. Fantasy, reality and the absurd are rolled up in one irreverent comedy, as the two world leaders get down and dirty concocting a series of harebrained crises to keep them both in office. San Jose Rep is thrilled to reprise Russell Lees’ hilarious and intelligent play with the award-winning original cast and production team from the 1997 production.

This fascinatingly funny and poignant dark comedy (labelled at the outset as "conjecture") of Richard Nixon's last night in the White House is marvelous as both a study in the abuse of presidential power as well as flaws of character. I saw this 10 years ago at the old Rep, and it is even better today. David Pichette IS Nixon, and Peter Van Norden IS Kissinger (plus Breshnev, Golda Meir and a few others). Russell Lees' script skewers Nixon's profanity and mean spirit, yet leaves him with a touch of humanity as he pleas for understanding from his daughter Julie near the end. Michael Butler's meticulous direction brings out marvelous details, and Kurt Landismann's new lighting design is better than the first time. Finally, the opening cameo by "Marine" Mike Taylor (a Mount Pleasant high school senior) is alone worth the price of admission. The Rep and Artistic Director Timothy Near deserve kudos for bringing this one back, particularly at this time. DON'T MISS IT Collapse
