Set against a gorgeous backdrop of Saharan sand dunes and colorful villages in the African nation of Mali, the 54-minute film chronicles James' musical adventures with three masters of traditional Malian instruments. The tongue-in-cheek title combines the name of the place, Timbuktu, with 'toubab,' the African slang word for a white person, as James is. Timbuktoubab, which has been screened at film festivals and aired widely on PBS stations around the country, is a heartwarming example of music's power to build cross-cultural friendships. This is the first time the art of film-making has been represented in the Evenings of Cultural Arts series. Markus James and The Wassonrai, multi-instrumentalists from Mali, will perform a live concert following the film. The unique music is the mesmerizing sound of the Mississippi Delta Blues flowing back to its ancient roots along the Niger River.
