Review/Comment
This exhibition surveys the work of New York and Seoul-based artist Il Lee. Born in Seoul, Korea in 1952, he received his M.F.A. in Painting from the Pratt Institute in New York in the 1970s, when minimalism dominated the international art scene. His work is non-representational and reductive in style, yet may also be linked to Asian calligraphy. Lee is best known for his expressive yet subtle work using the unorthodox medium of ballpoint pen on paper and canvas.

I am doing a report on this show for my art history class. I was surprised when I first looked at the artwork. It was slightly non-cohesive and over my head at first, but once I got to the room with the same picture in different colors (The End), the show came together. Intelligent, poignant comments were under each picture, pointing out something different about The End each time. Visually, it was not super interesting, however a closer look shows that the artists are very smart, creative people. Collapse

I appreciated the clarity of Garcia's vision, and her passion for her subject was evident in everything she drew and painted. But after a while all the works began to resemble each other too closely; I felt battered by the same strident tirade against suburbia over and over. Perhaps the exhibit could have used fewer works, or showed the artist's range by also including works with different themes. Collapse

there is so much going on in this exhibit--i loved the interactive nature of most of the works. the exhibit set up is also really remarkable and extremely well designed--if you appreciate museum design and installation, this is reason enough to see the show. the museum experience reps were also very kind and helpful, they answered questions without stealing the show, a rare and fabulous museum-going experience. we really enjoyed ourselves! even took the time to leave a positive comment card! looking forward to a second visit. "fun, mesmerizing"

You sit in front of a large array of small screens surrounded by speakers. Both words and symbols appear all while various sounds and voices appear. Pretty nifty and enthralling.

I've been to many PAC events and find myself falling in love more and more each time. I really hope everyone comes out and gets xposed, as they put it. :)

Wow! Went to this event yesterday and was blown away. Who knew this kind of thoughtful exploration of poetry was still being pursued by young artists? PC Munoz spoke about the need for finding new avenues for musical expression, now that the canon of pop music seems to be defined. then he and some fantastic musicians (including a theramin!) proceeded to show how it's done. New haiku poetry by PC Munoz, and by aspiring poets in the audience, was interpreted by the musicians in what he called a "small form" response to the poems' meanings. Munoz also showed paintings, photos and films attached to his prerecorded haiku poems, created by artists in response to the poems as well. The whole afternoon was ALIVE! I don't know if this performance will be repeated, but there is a CD of Munoz's "Twenty Haiku", which I bought at the event. fantastic. Glad to see THE ARTS thriving in San Jose!! Collapse
