New York City, 1922 - Based on the 1967 Oscar-winning film, this is the story of Millie, a young girl from Kansas who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself in the Roaring Twenties. Millie has a plan: to get a good job as a secretary for a very rich man and then marry him. Of course, nothing quite goes according to plan. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East; her very rich boss is slow in proposing marriage; and the man she actually falls in love with is poor as a church mouse. Great show-stopping numbers such as "Forget About the Boy," "Only in New York," "I’m Falling in Love with Someone," fabulous charleston tap-dance routines, and hilarious kidnap sequences make Thoroughly Modern Millie a thrilling night out! I saw Millie on Saturday night, my first time ever seeing it (I managed to avoid AMT, CMT, Starstruck, et al ;-) and this one was quite good as a production, although I don't particularly like the show itself. I see all the comments about loving Millie (the show) and I am not sure why, but each person is entitled to their own taste. The score is not that strong, and the script is pretty weak. However, C. Michael has put together a dandy production, especially his casting, including Zach Trimmer (heading to New York this summer!) as Jimmy and Michelle Barrow-Ianiro as Muzzie who blew the roof off (what a voice!) Rebecca Lipon was strong as Millie, and Donnie Matsuda almost stole the show as Ching Ho! Kudos to Norma Hughes for her 100th production! My only major complaint was the sound. You have to be able to hear the lyrics and many of the lyrics were lost on Saturday night. I hope it was a temporary thing for that night. Collapse

One of my favorite shows when I saw it on Broadway. There were some really strong performances in this production. Mrs. Meers, Ching Ho and Bun Foo made for some great laughs. Muzzy and her star numbers were delights. I felt the visual sense of the show was not consistant. Some really drab scenes buffered with some far too vibrant ones was hard on the eyes. The set was decent and the lighting wonderful! Especially the nightclub scene. The talented cast was left in the dust with the unispired/underrehearsed choreography. The strongest part of the show was the excellent orchestra...highly enjoyable. I think I expected a bit more after coming to La Cage Aux Follis...which was the first time I attended shows here. SDG has assembled a stellar cast for their production of Millie. The sets and costumes are simply stunning and the direction is quite good. Rebecca Lipon is a likeable Millie while Zach Trimmer gives a knockout performance as Jimmy (this boy can sure sing, dance, and act!). Elizabeth McClelland and Stephane Alwyn give strong voices in their supporting roles. The real vocal standout is Michelle Barrow-Ianiro as Muzzy - she really brings the house down (more than once!) But the true scene stealers are the talented trio of Norma Hughes, Donnie Matsuda, and Lawrence Michael Arias who delight the audience with their hilarious and adorable performances. Go out and support this top notch cast in this thoroughly entertaining show! Collapse

From the opening sounds of the overture to the standing ovation for Norma Hughes, a smile never left my face. What great fun and entertainment too on the opening night of this Saratoga Drama Group production. Rebecca Lipon is perfectly cast and indeed is a triple threat: singer, dancer, actress. Her leading man Zack Trimmer matches her moment to moment as he is also talented in all three areas. Great support from Stephane Alwyn as Trevor and Elizabeth McClelland as Miss Dorothy and then there is Norma Hughes(in her 100th production) as Mrs. Meers. However, the best vocal chops are from Michelle Barrow-Ianiro as Muzzy. She sure can sing!! And her costumes are great too. In fact all the costumes were colorful which lended the extra bright look to the show. Molly Carter also shines in the role of Miss Flannery. Loved her costume too. As the Chinese brothers, one couldn't have found a better twosome than Lawrence Arias and Donnie Matsuda. This show is tops from beginning to end. Collapse

Many companies are currently offering productions of "Millie"-- and this is the one to beat! Musical Direction and Choreograhy are flawless. You'll leave the theater singing the songs and talking about the beautiful costumes designed by Director C. Michael Traw. Millie, Muzzy, Trevor, Dorothy, Jimmy, Mrs. Meers, Ching Ho and Bun Foo are adorable and entertaining. The multi-talented ensemble brightens the stage whenever they appear, led by Bobby Giraudo and Kevin Cornelius, who stand out as energetic gems in the chorus. Bring your family and friends to enjoy this highly entertaining musical-- they will thank you! Collapse
