Neil Simon's The Gingerbread Lady is an onion of a play, with deep layers, things that could make you cry, and things that are delicious. The story centers around an alcoholic singer named Evy, but while that's what makes the play go, that's not all it's about. The Gingerbread Lady is, first and foremost, about a mother and a daughter, both desperate in their need for each other, but neither posessing the tools required to express that need adequately. Set in the 1970's, this play gives us wisecracking New Yorkers with deep issues and dares to show the pain behind the wisecracks. This is a touching and important piece, intimately performed in the 42-seat dragon theatre. This play contains adult themes and language, and due to the intimacy of the theatre, there is no late seating.

There is in fact humor in the acidic sarcasm of this play which accent the dysfunctional and tragic aspects, making them all the more powerful. A strong cast, and fantastic technical features make this yet another Dragon show, that should not be missed. Not so much a wind down from the work week production, it requires some stamina to sit through some of the intense and more depressing moments, but in true Neil Simon fashion, just when you want to scream from sympathy for these troubled souls, you are coaxed into a laugh. It was easy to be emotionally involved in the lives of this people. It's dated, and crass in places, but improtant and moving. Collapse

The Gingerbread Lady has a great cast! The role of Evy's daughter, played by a sophmore in high school, is not an easy role to play. The quick wit and sensitivity the young actress brings to the role is refreshing. The set really captures the 70's in a cramped New York apartment. This show is worth seeing! Collapse

Gingerbread Lady is about 3 people dealing with their own personal demons, though Evy, who attempts to be a recovering alcoholic, is the primary focus. The slow moving pace in first act picks up in the final act as the characters meet critical points in their lives. The acting ranges from adequate to good, though Carolyn Power fills her role as Toby quite well as the aging beauty, especially during her moment in the spotlight. This is not a "feel good" type story where everyone ends up happily ever after, but delves into how these people deal with life's difficult times, mostly by denial and depression. They show their frailties and insecurities in their unsuccessful efforts in dealing with their problems. Collapse
