I saw Chekhov in Yalta a few days ago, and am glad I did when I did - it ends in just a few days (Sun. 10/14). If you've never been to the Dragon Theatre (on Alma directly across from the University Ave. CalTrain station - so your carbon footprint can be very small getting to it), you're in for a real treat! There's not a bad seat in the house; anyone in the 45 or so "stadium style" seats is right up close - which, of course, is the way to see any live performance, but especially this lively comedy. There's some really fine acting going on here, from a very obviously dedicated group. Only a couple very brief instances of overdone horseplay put the slightest damper on my otherwise high enjoyment of the production. So for a great, fun escape to Yalta a century ago, Dragon Theatre is the place to head! Collapse

Kudos to Dragon Productions Theater for successfully tackling a show with period costumes, 11 actors and a set evoking the Russian seaside. If you're familiar with Chekov's writing - nothing ever happens in your plays! - and Stanislavski's arrogance - Chekov will not be remembered! - you'll howl at these quirky artists, superbly portrayed by James Allen Brewer (Chekov)and Dale Albright (Stainslavski). Not a Russian Theater fan? There are plenty of other fun and touching moments created by Laura Jane Bailey,Mary Lou Torre, Particia Tyler and Anna Marie MacLeod. "Chekov in Yalta" is sure to sell out it's final performances. Buy or reserve tickets now. Tick, tick tick. Collapse

This was such a great production. The performances were top rate - particularly Laura Bailey as Olga and Dale Albright as Stanislavsky. Bill Jones and Will Brown were fantastic in throwaway parts. Mary Lou Torre and Annamarie MacLeod really stood out as well, in a production that was beautiful to look at and a delight to behold. Kudos to Dragon Productions and to the director and producer and designers! Collapse

Quite a play! I was surprised at the quality of the set design. It was simple and effective. As for the acting, I thought that the ensemble meshed well and that there were some stand-out moments from Annamarie MacLeod (as the maid, Fyokla), as well as Manuel Rojas (Maxim Gorky) and especially noteworthy was Mary Lou Torre (Masha). All in all I feel that the ticket price was money well-spent. Collapse

This was a terrific, beautifully produced show, performed by an intelligent, professional cast. Especially noteworthy were James Allen Brewer's excellent portrayal of Anton Chekhov, Dale Albright's wildly funny Stanislavski and Laura Jane Bailey's smart, sexy Olga Knipper. Some solid performances, a lovely set, and wonderful costumes help to make this play enjoyable on the sureface. there is a wonderful additional layer of jokes for those Familiar with Chekhov and with the acting philosophies and methods of the Moscow Art Theatre, Stanislovski, and the general theatre world. Humorous and sometimes touching, this is a well written play that does well in the intimate theatre. Collapse

I just saw Dragon Theatre's stunning production of "Chekhov in Yalta." It featured the abundant talents of an amazing ensemble of actors, headed by the brilliant James Allen Brewer, who breathed passionate life into the title role, offering an intelligent, witty and heart-wrenching performance. Also noteworthy were Laura Jane Bailey's wonderfully lush and razor-sharp embodiment of the Moscow Art Theatre's star actress Olga Knipper, Dale Albright's side-splittingly over-the-top comic portrayal of Konstantin Stanislavsky and Mary Lou Torre's excellent turn as Chekhov's sad but loving sister Masha. The rest of the players were outstanding as well. John T. Aney's direction was top-notch, the set was lovely and Mae Matos's dazzling costumes were especially noteworthy for their authenticity and attention to detail. If you see nothing else this season, don't miss this rare opportunity to see theatrical history being simulateously brought to life and created anew. Collapse
