This musical relocates the "Madame Butterfly" story to Saigon in the last days of the Vietnam War. An American soldier has a torrid but brief love affair with a Vietnamese girl, Kim. They are separated in the fall of Saigon. Thinking Kim dead, Chris returns home to marry an American. But Kim begins an odyssey to escape her Communist homeland and reunite with the man she's sure is waiting for her--and their son. Kim is accompanied on each step of her journey by a man called the Engineer, a Eurasian who will stop at virtually nothing to achieve his twisted version of the American Dream.

Excellent show! I saw it last Friday and never thought I would see this one outside & done so well. From the moment you hear the opening helicopter fly over head to last note of the score, this show is rivoting. It is easy to why the engineer has been touring with show in the past; his timing, movement and character was captivating. The leads were wonderfully played and other standouts include the characters of Chris, Kim, and John, all explored the emotional scale from sentiment to comedy, and you could be laughing or crying depending on the moment of the show. YES - there is a helicopter and it a rather awesome effect. The ensemble sounds great, and has some wonderful movement, but for a moment of constructive criticism "The Morning of the Dragon" could have been clearer. It is the only place where some of the vocals are not heard. This is why they get 4 stars and not 5, but definitely a must see !! Collapse
