Add Review/CommentBetween Light and Shadow: Oil pastel paintings by JoAnne Horsfall Beasley and ceramic sculpture by Karen Truesdell at The Main Gallery, October 18 th to November 19 th. There will be a reception on October 22 nd from 4 to 7 with music by guitarist Rick Vandivier. Mr.Vandivier will play between 4:30-6:30 p.m. JoAnne Beasley was excited about this show and worked up to the last on the art she loved. It was a departure from her usual landscapes in that the paintings include buildings important in her life. Sadly she lost her battle with cancer and died on September 29 th. The artists of The Main Gallery invite you to honor our wonderful artist and friend by viewing her works. Stanford University is the place that brought the Beasley family to California. They were invited to visit in 1973 and the entire family picked up Amtrak in Chicago for a 6 weeks stay. They returned permanently the next summer and have been in Palo Alto and the Trinities of California ever since…enjoying California more than they could ever have imagined. Trinity Alps Resort was their first family vacation place (after a tourist-laden visit to Yosemite in the first summer in 1975) and they returned to The Resort every year since until building their own ‘cabin’ up in the Trinities in 1999. The idea of a show titled ‘ Between Light and Shadows,…Reflections on A Sense of Place: Stanford University and The Trinity Alps’ struck Ms. Beasley as an interesting concept as she had been aware for some time of the strong light sources in her paintings in both of these places. She saw the landscapes, all with buildings of one kind of architecture or another, as also capable of psychological and occasional hints of philosophical similarities and dissimilarities. JoAnne Horsfall Beasley painted since childhood, receiving a BFA and MFA from Cornell University in the mid- 1960’s. She painted the landscape of California for over 40 years. Karen Truesdell’s ceramic sculptures take the idea of Between Light and Shadow into the psychological… ‘Inner Landscapes and The Games We Play’. Using a variety of clays (white stoneware to deep red terra cotta) she has placed them on bases which both extend their form and message. Everyman figures play games with a scientific edge on arches reminiscent of the Stanford Quad: Bird women soar over rocks. Truesdell, a long time resident of Menlo Park, studied at Stanford, San Jose State and the Corcorran School of Art. She has taught and shown in the bay area for over 40 years.
