This is very wordy and confusing play. It's obvious now why it's one of Stoppard's least performed plays. It's just not very good. He tries to mix farce with absurdity and it just misses too often. A... Expand
This is very wordy and confusing play. It's obvious now why it's one of Stoppard's least performed plays. It's just not very good. He tries to mix farce with absurdity and it just misses too often. A couple of the actors really understood the genre but the others seemed to be unsure of what they were all about for much of the show. Collapse

I think I'm required to say "delightful romp" when we're dealing with a farce. Ivor Fish was a definite standout since he really had the melodrama thing going (it was just right). But I hasten to add that the whole cast was excellent. They seemed to have a good rapport and presented a nice, funny show in a small space. And of course, just rocked Stoppard's fabulous lines...one gag after another. Well executed in all aspects (there's even singing). :) Overall, I had a good time. Collapse

Friday's treat was opening night at the Dragon Theater in Palo Alto, a full house + 3 folding chairs. Rough Crossing by Tom Stoppard is very entertaining, and director Dave Sikula did a brilliant job with it. The play is set on a steamship in the 30's sailing from Southampton to New York via Cherbourg. Turai (Steve Cortopassi) is a playwright whose leading man Adam (Jason Arias) has come down with a case of vocal block (it can take up to two days to get a sentence out) and has been replaced by Ivor (Noel Wood) who was the first lover of Adam's fiance Natasha (Monica Cappuccini). Adams stays on as the show's musical composer. The sometimes acid and usually verbose Turai is kept in check by his producer Gal (Magenta Brooks) and the whole lot is served by a steward named Dvornichek (Jonathan Ferro). Once it got past a slow start (and overcame some challenges from a very bizarre audience) this show picks up an amazing amount of emotional steam. Don't miss Pat Tyler and Josh Sigal in performances that will blow you away (standouts in a uniformally good cast). I am writing this at midnight on Friday in the hopes it will be posted before the show closes on Sunday so that must tell you something. I was very pleasantly suprised! Collapse

Comic timing, a solid script, a wonderful depth to each character, and another fantastic set makes this a really wonderful, laugh out loud, edge of your seat dark comedy. It starts right in with witty and realistic banter and through the course of this short, 1 1/2 hour production you really get to know these 3 women. Hard to do, but done so well. They really rose to the challenge. So refreshing to see a well rounded show from beginning to end. Collapse

What can I say? This show was a breath of fresh air in what was a very long week for me. I refuse to spoil anything, since many of the seemingly insignificent plot details manifest into twists, but I don't think anyone will find it boring. I especially enjoyed Laura Jane Bailey's performance. This show pulls no punches, and forces you to either cheer on or condemn the wives, and by extension to look at the forces which brought them to this point. Collapse

I saw Chekhov in Yalta a few days ago, and am glad I did when I did - it ends in just a few days (Sun. 10/14). If you've never been to the Dragon Theatre (on Alma directly across from the University Ave. CalTrain station - so your carbon footprint can be very small getting to it), you're in for a real treat! There's not a bad seat in the house; anyone in the 45 or so "stadium style" seats is right up close - which, of course, is the way to see any live performance, but especially this lively comedy. There's some really fine acting going on here, from a very obviously dedicated group. Only a couple very brief instances of overdone horseplay put the slightest damper on my otherwise high enjoyment of the production. So for a great, fun escape to Yalta a century ago, Dragon Theatre is the place to head! Collapse

Kudos to Dragon Productions Theater for successfully tackling a show with period costumes, 11 actors and a set evoking the Russian seaside. If you're familiar with Chekov's writing - nothing ever happens in your plays! - and Stanislavski's arrogance - Chekov will not be remembered! - you'll howl at these quirky artists,superbly portrayed by James Allen Brewer (Chekov)and Dale Albright (Stainslavski). Not a Russian Theater fan? There are plenty of other fun and touching moments created by Laura Jane Bailey,Mary Lou Torre, Particia Tyler and Anna Marie MacLeod. "Chekov in Yalta" is sure to sell out it's final performances. Buy or reserve tickets now. Tick, tick tick. Collapse
