A former super heroine, Thunderbabe is now retired to the life of wife and soccer mom. Out of the blue, evil villainess, Toxic Passion breaks out of prison, threatens to enslave the globe, and wreak vengeance on Thunderbabe and her former crime-fighting partner (and ex-lover) the Golden Falcon. Suddenly Thunderbabe finds herself grappling with skeletons in her closet that threaten to trash her marriage, reveal her secret identity, and rekindle an old flame she'd hoped was long since buried, all while battling a ruthless madwoman and a whopper of a mid-life crisis. Can an out-of-practice, menopausal super heroine squeeze back into her spandex and get her act together in time to save the world? Co sponsored by Citylights Theatre Company, and performed and the wonderful downtown San Jose caberet style Theatre on San Pedro Square.

Thunderbabe is a funny and entertaining show, with several hummable melodies and a cast who look like they're enjoying themselves as much as the audience is. Babe gives a great portrait of a woman who's hidden so much that she hardly knows herself anymore. Rita brings marvelous tartness to counterbalance Babe's turmoil, Taylor shows a perfect mix of teenage resentment and enthusiasm, and Arthur's simmering bitterness and insecurities are so vivid that it's very gratifying later to see him beginning to come into his own. There's a real excitement as the characters gather for the final confrontation, and the resolution takes a turn that I didn't see coming. Definitely worth seeing if you can make it for this last weekend of performances. Collapse

        1. Jazz squares, no matter how many a cast does, do not constitute good choreography. 2. Toxic Passion, getting carried out on your lackeys shoulders is only cool once. 3. Costume designer: reconsider your career. 4. Stickers on flat drops do not a set make. 5. If a character is trapped in a cave with no exit, other characters should not be entering and exiting said cave every thirty seconds. 6. An extremely sexist joke about how men should be used like high heels cannot be followed up by complaining about how sexist men are. 7. One cannot joke about not being able to break copyright laws and then throw out names and images of copyrighted DC and Marvel comic characters with abandon. I wish I had enough characters for a real review, but please--PLEASE--for the sake of theater as ART, do not support this. There is a purpose for what we do on the stage, and it has nothing to do with sassy menopause gags. Collapse

Whether young or old, or male or female, go see this inspired, whimsicle, and very entertaining musical! The storyline keeps just the right pace, and allows you to track with it each step of the way. The entire cast is tremendous, and the characters are a lot of fun. Bobbi, the creator, also does a great job as the heroine. There was something for everyone. The script is smart and witty, with plenty of humor and laughs. Go see it! You'll have a great time. Our group all loved it, including my elderly mom! Collapse

The best part of this production had to be Toxic Passion, the sexy villain played by Heather Gordon, she was the show stealer. Her belty notes and her characterization of the role were flawless and made the show very enjoyable! Her costume was sexy and looked great on her trim figure. Definetely recommend the show! Collapse

Baby Boomers and everyone else with a sense of humor, come see this Rocky Hilarious show. If you're anything like me, you'll laugh 'til you cry while enjoying the upbeat music, precise choreography, comic book costumes, and clever set. Oh yes, and the acting is first rate too. For those not familiar with the Theatre on San Pedro Square, you'll be pleased and surprised as I was that there's a very handsome bar at the back of the theater that's open before curtain and during intermission for those who'd like a glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Guiness to enhance the experience. Thunderbabe is a silly romp to a world of super heroes and villians cashing in on today's multi-media allure of the recent Spiderman, Batman, X-Men, Fantastic Four (you get the idea)mania. The difference here is the sci-fi craze gets the musical comedy treatment, with sharp wit and a "don't take yourself too seriously" bent. Caught the staged reading of the play a few years ago and it has grown substantially with the addition of a fun pop/rock score, outlandish costumes and snappy direction. If you're looking for Les Miserables or Phantom this isn't it. Sets are minimal but effective. The orchestra is a tight 3-piece combo. This is a light-hearted romp of make-believe meeting not-so-make believe. Where else can you get over-the-hill super heroes, guilt, treachery, neurosis, a touch of sentimentality and general silliness in a feel good two hour escape? My suggestion is leave your mega-musical ego at the door, put on your inner child persona and enter the world of Thunderbabe! Collapse
