The Los Altos History Museum invites the public to look at history from the sky in its new exhibit opening January 18 and running through April 8, 2007. Scene from Above: Aerial Maps & Photos of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills examines how and why we chart the earth, from hand-drawn Spanish disenos, to aerial photos, to GoogleEarth. Along the way, guests will see just how much the Peninsula has changed since the time of the Spanish missionaries. “Aerial photographers are preservers of history,” states exhibit chair Jane Reed. Los Altos History Museum has a collection of photos – including Palo Alto and Mountain View - from the huge Hatfield Aerial Surveys collection, some of which are featured in the exhibit. Ben Hatfield, 60, of San Jose, owns more than 10,000 aerial photographs shot from 1947 to 1979 in hundreds of areas from San Francisco to Monterey taken by his late father, former WWII aerial photographer Adrian Hatfield. The collection features the Bay Area long before it became Silicon Valley, when it was a place largely defined by small towns, orchards and two-lane roads.
