Winner of every major award for drama, this enthralling, ravishingly theatrical play chronicles the life of John Merrick, the deformed 19th century carnival attraction who became an urbane and clever favorite of Victorian society. His dream of recognition as a man like any other propels a quest for acceptance and equality that touches the heart of the human experience. Portrayed without makeup or device, the Elephant Man is one of the epic characters of contemporary theatre. Brief partial nudity.

The Elephant Man has its highlights, but also a few problems. First the good points - the acting was well done, especially Aldo Billingslea playing the lead. Aldo had a tough role in that he had to portray the Elephant Man character without makeup. He succeeded well with coordinated (but not overdone) hunched, twisting body movements and slurred speech. Additionally, the costume designs and outfits were excellent; a definite cut about the usual fare. On the downside, the play itself moves slowly, especially in the first half as it relies entirely too much on dialog. The second half picks up with a good role switching fantasy by John Merrick that contrasts the differing social worlds that he sees. Overall, I give it 3 out of 5 stars. Collapse
