Before Rent, before Tommy, before even Jesus Christ Superstar, there was HAiR, the first REAL rock musical. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Hair premiere at New York's Public Theatre, Hair returns to San Jose this summer in what will surely be a celebrated event. The year 2007 looks so much like the year 1967: America remains embroiled in a war that many believe should not have been fought, a President is estranged from the feelings of the people, and youth is once again rising up to demand acknowledgement and freedom. With songs like "Aquarius", "Easy To Be Hard", "Where Do I Go?", and "Black Boys/White Boys", "Hair" reverberated musically through the nation. Eight of its songs hit the Billboard charts and four went all the way to number one. The nude scene (modest by today's standards) was revolutionary and blazed a trail that many followed.

I DROVE DOWN FROM SAN FRAN WITH 3 FRIENDS. WE WERE DELIGHTFULLY SURPRISED. THE SHOW IS WONDERFULLY MOUNTED: COSTUMES, MUSIC , CHOEREOGRAPHY AND SINGING ALL QUITE TERRIFIC. THE CAST GAVE 110% THROUHOUT. WE ESPECIALLY THOUGHT THE THREE LEADS WERE VERY PROFESSIONAL. SAMMY RODRIGUEZ AS "BERGER" WAS A SEXY AND TALENTED STANDOUT. Collapse

My husband and I truly enjoyed this performance of Hair. The cast gave it their all and clearly enjoyed what they were doing. The intimate setting of the theater made it that much more enjoyable. If we could, we would see it again. We did notice, however, that some of the lyrics were changed in two of the songs and one song that does not appear on the original Broadway or London recordings was added (and we loved it - "I Love My Hippie LIfe"). One of the women had her belly button pierced and I don't think that was true to the time period. She should have removed it or wore a top that covered it. Also, one actress completely overacted. Otherwise, it was a great show and all the actors should be pleased with their performance. Collapse

Great message, beautiful harmonies, groovin' band and contagious energy! We were captivated from beginning to end. Our 3 hour drive from Placer county to see this performance was well worth it.

This production of Hair, while lacking in great singers, was very fun. The dancing and acting was good and everyone did a wonderful job pulling in the audience. There were a couple of stand out singers, for example (I only know the character names, sorry) Sheila and Tad were great. Overall the preformance was good, but I would have like to see the casting director utilize Tad better. I felt the price was right for me since I got the student price of $15. However, I don't think I would pay more than that to see this cast. Collapse

I also give a "Two Thumbs Up" to this performance of "Hair"!! I saw the original production in 1969 at the Aquarius Theater in Los Angeles many times and this production is as good as that one! I've gone several times to the San Jose production (I can't help myself because I waited so long for it to finally come back) and each time it gets better and better. The cast, or the "Tribe" as they like to call themselves, just keep getting more cohesive with each other, which makes the production flow more smoothly each time. If you want to take a wonderful "trip" back to the 60's or just want to see what the 60's were all about, "RUN", don't walk, to get yourself a ticket to the hottest show in town!! Collapse

This production of HAIR is phenomenal. I enjoyed every bit of it - including the transition between sets and songs. The cast really is a joy to watch. Kudos to you all.

The players were energetic. I wish the director had been a lot more selective when giving out solos. The male players were fairly strong across the board. The two leads and the token "gay" were played very nicely. The big weakness was in the selection of the female singers. There did not seem to be any correlation between who had solos and who could actually sing. Players of both sexes kept trying to sing outside of their range. Finding their own style would have been much better than trying and failing to imitate the original. Collapse
