One of the classic musicals in American theatre history! Rodgers and Hammerstein's great score includes The Carousel Waltz, If I Loved You, June is Bustin' Out All Over, Mr. Snow, and You'll Never Walk Alone.

I think "Carousel" is one of those shows people either love or hate. It has some of R & H's best music, yet tells a story that today we find unacceptable. Any show written for audiences 60 years ago was written to appeal to the public's mentality at the time. By presenting a show as originally written, companies can be subjected to unkind comments about "out of date" or "lengthy" books. Yet if a company attempts to update or shorten a show, they are then ridiculed for messing with a classic of American Musical Theater. Tough call to make. I'm glad I don't have to make that kind of a decision. Foothill's production is very good, and shouldn't be missed, especially if all you've ever seen is the movie, which (in true Hollywood fashion) is an inaccurate, sugar-coated interpretation of the stage show. "Strong Ensemble!"

Every time the ensemble enters the stage, the show brightens up, and that's not easy to do in Carousel. Clearly, this group of people are having a blast together!

As far as bay area theater goes, Foothill's shows have always been at the top or near the top of the mountain of talent. Carousel shows why. Really nice singing, some great casting, and an ensemble that looks like they are having fun up there. You aren't going to find a show out there now that is much higher --I've seen most out there already-- Thank-you Foothill for another beautiful touching show. Collapse

Interesting show. I've seen show before, but liked Foothill's take. Different. I guess they took after the 92 London Revival. Show is darker to say the least. The set pieces really stand out, and the lighting design defines a darker mood. The "mounting" of the actual Carousel horses was pretty darn cool, and it is true there is nothing that will top that beginning. Most moments stand on their own. There will probably be some awards for Foothill coming to them on the show. Best show ever? Nah, probably not. Darn good show? You bet. Collapse

Don't get me wrong, I loved Billy and Julie, but I really perked up when the actors that played Mr. Basecombe, Starkeeper, Heavenly friend came on. Even though they weren't on stage for very long, I kept watching to see what they would do next, as one could already determine what Billy-Julie-Carrie would do. Ms. Mullien was also a nice role, as was Jigger's to watch. I just...BELIEVED them, lol. A couple of leads can't take the whole show on it's back, and the smaller roles in Carousel show that casting must be solid all the way around. Overall, good show. I enjoyed it very much, though the show runs a bit long (3 hours with intermission). Wonderful beautiful music though. May see again, towards the end of the run. Collapse

An amazing production! The sets, the lights, the direction and the sound were all top notch! Couldn't find a better way to spend my evening if I tried.

Carousel is a classic 1940-50's musical. When groups perform it, they usually make it very bright, and joyful, and happy... If you read the script, Carousel ISN'T a happy show! Nor should one expect a happy bright show. Foothill's Carousel went in a totally different direction with it, and I applaud them! I saw the show Thursday night, and loved almost every minute of it. Foothill made the show dark which is how it should have always been. How can you do a show about beating your wife and commiting sucicide, and make it happy and bright??? You can't. Foothill though went all the way with it, and thus made the show much more believable. I really enjoyed the period costumes and sets. The leads were all very good, and everyone could belt out their respective songs. The show was a long one, but I suppose all the shows from the 40's-50's are pretty long: that's just how they were written. Lots of wonderful music, and some fun (though not superduper dazzling) dances. Nice work! Collapse

While there are some nice voices in this show, the direction and choreography are very poor. There is little attempt to streamline and enhance the script. As a result, this nearly 3 hour show clunks along without many interesting moments. Add to that sets, costumes, and an orchestra that are not up to Foothill's usual high standard and you have a less than entertaining evening of theatre. Just a warning: you might want to consider spending your money on a show that will give you more bang for your buck. Collapse
