    Some think Cosi fan tutte is a tragedy in clown's clothing. It may have been that Da Ponte and Mozart simply could not conceive a superficial farce, but they could easily write somthing meaningful and make the whole world think it a farce. The proposition that these two young men could don Albanian disguises and successfully switch sweethearts is worthy of Lucy and Ethel. But let's say they managed it. What then? This comedy is clever, witty, facile, and immortal, but maybe that is because it is so much more than just funny.
