His first masterpiece, The Flying Dutchman is far more audience-friendly than Wagner's later works. It offers the richness of his orchestral palate, but with many choruses and duets, and a full-blown, bigger than life love story. It is unquestionably a work of power and dark beauty, and it is impossible to imagine a better telling of the legend of the cursed Dutchman. In the teeth of a storm at the Cape of Good Hope, a Dutch sea captain swore an oath and through it was cursed to sail the oceans, putting into port only once every seven years, until a woman loves him faithfully until her death. He finds such love in Senta, the daughter of a Norwegian sea captain. Though engaged to Erik, Senta is ever more obsessed by the legend of the Dutchman, and when her father meets the Dutchman while sheltering from a storm, her inexplicable obsession to rescue the mariner becomes a possibility. When they meet, a mystical love binds them, but the Dutchman learns that she is engaged and immediately sets sail. Senta is able to redeem him by giving up her life for his sake, faithful unto death. The Flying Dutchman is a weave of sea-shanty choruses, winning solos from the steersman, a charming women's chorus, the impassioned obsession of Senta, the hurt of Erik's rejection, the confusion of Senta's father, rousing choruses of townsfolk, and the powerfully rendered agony of the eternal Dutchman. The Flying Dutchman is thought to be Wagner's most readily gratifying work for the stage. The lead role of the Dutchman will be sung by Douglas Nagel.
