H.C. Westermann (1922–1981) is primarily known as a sculptor and printmaker, but he began his career in Chicago as a painter. This exhibition brings together his paintings, sculptures, and drawings from the 1950s and 1960s, many of which were based on his experiences in the military during World War II and the Korean War. Although Westermann's art has been linked to surrealism and dada, it also refers to Native American and tribal art, making Westermann an entirely original, idiosyncratic talent. The exhibition is organized and toured by The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu.
