Drawings - Visions, Surfaces, and Beyond
April 16-June 30, 2007
Drawing: Visions, Surfaces, and Beyond presents the work of 23 contemporary Bay Area artists who have employed the medium of drawing to create works ranging from classical life drawings to abstract renderings. Whether it is a finely detailed reclining figure, a study in charcoal of a master painting, or free-flowing vision of abstraction, each of the artists represented demonstrate the immediacy and versatility of drawing. Some of the artists even push the definitions of "drawing," as in the wire sculptures of Ruth Asawa whose intricate constructions become drawings in three-dimensional space, as shadows emulate an ever-moving line drawing on the surrounding walls. Participating artists at this writing include Ruth Asawa, Noah Buchanan, Enrique Chagoya, Robert Chiarito, Lindsay Coats, James Drake, Mark Eanes, Peter Foley, Don Fritz, Ema Harris-Sintamarian, Mildred Howard, Amanda Hughen, Laura Klein, Jerri Kuehn, Crystal Liu, Paul Mullins, Stephen Namara, Leroy Parker, Trung Pham, Gustavo Ramos Rivera, Isis Rodriguez, Jennie Smith, and Reid Winfrey.

This is a great, fun, enchanting exhibit. It's like walking in a forest of giant mushrooms.

I was impressed by the sheer quantity of work apparently completed in the last year. Many of the canvases looked as if they had been worked and reworked such that I wonder if they are not culminations of a process that had been ongoing over multiple years. Not that it matters, the work is confidently wrought. As a body of work the paintings were extremely varied with not much coherence as a whole. The painting closest to the back entrance or side exit (painting situated to the right of exit) was most compelling because of the simplicity of the composition and pallet. It is always a treat to see the work of an art teacher and active artist Collapse
