Add Review/CommentA retrospective exhibition of works by former San Jose City College professor of art, Luis Gutierrez. Whether he is painting abstract forms that reveal his emotions, giving voice to his psychological responses to experiences that touch him -- such as the Katrina disaster, the passing of a friend, anxiety over a lost cat -- or creating an intricately constructed assemblage sculpture that reveals his fascination with antiques, advertising, and the many external assaults on our perceptions, Gutierrez can be relied upon to deliver his most intimate musings. His is a vocabulary of abstract emotion, profound, often playful, and always challenging in its avoidance of easily recognizable narration. Gutierrez was long-time professor of art at San Jose City College, now retired. This exhibition will offer a survey of the artist’s remarkable career, body of work, and A reception to meet the artist will be held Friday, May 11, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
