San José State University Opera Theater will perform a fully produced double bill of contemporary American operas entitled Roman Fever and The Village Singer, by two of the most acclaimed living American operatic composers, respectively Robert Ward and Stephen Paulus. Roman Fever (1993) is based on Edith Wharton’s short story. Two women of New York’s upper crust dine overlooking the Roman Forum and reminisce about their last meeting there, when they were prospective brides, as are now their “flapper” daughters. As the sun sets, the conversation becomes increasingly confrontational, leading to a dramatic ending. “Roman Fever is an adroit, thoughtfully expanded operatic treatment of a great story….plenty to enjoy.” Stephen Paulus’ The Village Singer (1979), based on a short story by the late-19th century chronicler of rural America Mary Wilkins Freeman, records the turbulence that overcomes a congregation when its long-time soloist is involuntarily retired to make way for a younger singer. Her revenge leads to a battle of the hymns, and ultimately to a poignant deathbed reconciliation. At the time of its premiere, Andrew Porter in The New Yorker called it “at once fresh and masterly,” and New York Magazine considered “its dramatic assurance… exhilarating.”
