A story the world knows by heart: a young Jewish girl's harrowing account of hiding with her family from the Nazis in a tiny attic in Amsterdam. A striking new adaptation restores deleted passages from the diary, offering a richer look into this extraordinary young woman's coming of age. Drawing on newly discovered material from the diary that changed the world, Kesselman's play shows Anne Frank in a more human, realistic light as we honor the 60th anniversary of its publication.

This show stirred something in me. The directing is excellent - the stage pictures are truly poignant, especially the ones at the beginning, right before intermission, and near the end. The actress playing Anne is really good, especially for someone her age. I also like this new updated version of the script, since Anne is more of a unique character in her own right, and more vulnerable. At the end I was crying. I disagree with the post which says this is commercial theater exploiting the holocaust. I come from a family of holocaust survivors, and I think it's important to keep telling the story of the holocaust, and I feel this production respects the human suffering which happened. Collapse

Otto Frank, Anne's father, authorized and supervised the writing of the play and the original production. It was written and produced during a time when Jews were still feared and discriminated against because of their religion. Mr. Frank and others felt that this story could reach out to people, explain some of Judaism to the general public, and tell the story of the horror of the Holocaust. Only when you pay attention to the details of the actual words from the diary that are incorporated into the play can you appreciate the predicament of the people in the Secret Annex, a microcosm of the thousands, perhaps millions, of others who had to hide to survive. The theater turns the life of Anne Frank and other victims of Holocaust into unauthentic commercial performance which does not even attempt to live up to the ideals captured in Anne's diary.
