Add Review/CommentThe Main Gallery will celebrate it's 7th birthday with a great new show titled Eye Tunes. The eye-catching birthday show will run from August 8 to Sept. 9, 2007. There will be an artist reception on Sunday August 12 from 4-7 p.m., with events throughout the day. From 1-2 p.m., there will be artist demonstrations. With River (an acoustic duo) will perform from 3-4 p.m. The Melissa Dinwiddle Jazz Combo will perform from 5-7 p.m. The artists have created a diverse collection of works encompassing numerous interpretations of, and variations on the theme of music. The inspirations, subject and images are as distinct as the artists who created them, and often include highly personal references. Ceramic artist Karen Truesdell has created a stoneware figure, titled Teach Me Tonight, which emanates from her youth. "Teach Me Tonight brings back such a strong memory of that long-ago high school prom and dancing cheek to cheek under the glass ball," Truesdell said. "It was a Frank Sinatra song, I think." For painter Liz Noerdlinger, music is her inspiration in her studio. "I listen to music all the time when I paint," she said, "so it's very natural for me to think of music and art. I listen to rock, jazz, new age and classical, all depending on my mood or the freeness or carefulness of my approach. For Eye Tunes, Noerdlinger has been working in abstract with her landscapes and focusing more on the sky with shifting clouds and colors at dawn and dusk are "like layers of music." Ceramic artist Susan Wolf has been making music boxes. "Some of them, such as Serenade and Raga are visually akin to music," she said, "with rhythmically repeated motifs and colors." For ceramic artist Jeff Carlick, who has been making decorative ceramic guitars for years, Eye Tunes has literally struck a chord. Thus inspired, Carlick will have an array of instruments that actually play. Or at least make noise. There will be an English Harp, an acoustic guitar, percussion vessels and other surprises.
