Chekhov's heartbreaking work hauntingly evokes the longing for a lost golden time and the expectation - however improbable - of somehow finding it again.

Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. This is how Chekov is supposed to be done: tragic, comically tragic, and subtle. Everything about the acting in this show is superb.

Thanks viewers for all the lovely reviews-- just one correction: the show runs only two hours, plus one ten-minute intermission. Still time to go out afterwards for dessert or a drink!

The Pear Thetre has done it again! Its current production of Chekov's "Three Sisters" is a marvelous and compelling re-staging of this much- loved classic. If you see only one play this year, see this one - it won't disappoint. Guided by Craig Lucas' luminous new translation, and directed by the visionary directorial talent of Jeanie Forte (Forte's directing is truly gifted; she's at the top among the Bay Area's elite directors), this rendering of "Three Sisters" was spell-binding from start to finish. The Pear's gloriously intimate space is a perfect venue to bring forward the subtle depth and richness of Chekov's characters - including small moments of intimacy that ordinarily get overlooked in larger venues. If you want to experience Chekov in a way that few have have an opportunity to, and feel touched by genius, see this play. Collapse

Jeanie Forte has done it again with her production of Three Sisters. Elizabeth Coy is mesmerizing as the tragic Marsha, Sarah Cook is perfectly Russian in her portrayal of the dreamy Irina, and Meredith Hegedorn is believably grounded as the oldest of the three sisters (Olga). Checkov's love-struck colonel (Vershinin) is beautifully acted by Andrew Harkins his every move on stage (from his sideways glances to his passionate kisses) exudes his repressed love. He serves as a wonderful contrast to Shannon Stowe's in-your-face sensuality and ultimately evil Natasha. If it were not for the fact that the cast is so fantastic, one might say that Jim Johnson steals the show as the lowly Ferapont he is wonderfully effective in bringing the comedy into this essentially tragic play. While Checkov's intention is both sad and philosophical with this play, Jeanie Forte's direction is so engaging that one cannot help but feel uplifted after three hours of melancholy. Collapse
