A musical look at the courage it takes to follow your dreams, TICK, TICK... BOOM! is Jonathan Larson's autobiographical tale of a young composer on the brink of turning 30 and falling into oblivion. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city (TICK,), his best friend is making big bucks on Madison Avenue (TICK...), yet Jon is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical (BOOM!). Containing fourteen songs, ten characters, three actors, and a band, TICK, TICK... BOOM! takes you on the playwright/composer's journey that led to the Broadway blockbuster,
Rent.. Set in 1990, this traditional book musical is filled with instantly appealing melodies, and a unique blend of pop and musical theatre styles. Everyone, regardless of age, will love this youthful, endearing, and thoughtful piece, and will surely embrace the universal ideal of holding onto your dreams through life's most difficult challenges. -

Thoroughly enjoyed Tick Tick Boom at Theater at San Pedro Square this evening (12/21) in SJ, and urge your taking it in. So well done. Sunday's 2 pm show (12/23) is final one. Definitely worth the effort to fit it in during the hectic holiday period. Kudos to the three performers and the musicians. Collapse

I'm not a big fan of "Rent" or musicals generally, and only came along with a friend... But this performance really made an impact. All three performers were awe-inspiring and deserved a much larger audience. Granted, if you are somewhat over 30 as we are, you may initially balk at the show's premise that hitting 30 is one of life's major crises... and some of the first act songs left me unmoved by the banality of the lyrics (do i want to hear an ode to a bagel?) But, lyrical limitations aside, the music packs a punch, and songs like "Real Life" and "See Her Smile" were beautifully and movingly done; by the second act my personal reservations about the subject matter had left my head altogether. Excellent direction and choreography and strong muscial support too. Really, if you want to see a show this weekend, this is the one to see. Don't miss it! Collapse

As of this review, there are only two performances left to see Tick Tick Boom! Do yourself a favor and see this wonderful show. First, the venue is totally cool, you can enjoy a nice beverage and there is a total New York groove. Very intimate, great set. More important, the three actors (Andrew Ceglio, Sara Stein and Nick Ceglio) were AMAZING. Great vocals, great acting, wonderful energy. We knew nothing about the show and we all really enjoyed it. I wish that I had seen TTB before I saw "Rent," I would have enjoyed it even more, knowing what I now know about Jonathan Larson. The three actors' voices blended beautifully and their musicianship was quite evident. It was well worth a trip from Los Gatos to downtown San Jose. Do your part to support local theatre and see this great show, you will not regret it. Collapse
