Review/Comment
Schoolbook histories tell us that America's founding fathers made a bold and forthright Declaration of Independence in 1776. The real story of the Declaration is the basis for this witty and entertaining musical, bringing historical figures to life with all their personality, dilemmas, and family sacrifices as they debate the uncertain step of breaking off from England as an independent nation. 1776 opened on Broadway in 1969 and ran for three years. It won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

I'm not a huge fan of this show, but this production was fantastic. Also, I have never seen Lyric pack a house like that! The lighting was particularly well done. I enjoyed the fine performances of the congress, especially John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and John Dickinson. Some poor choices for the female costumes in my opinion, but other than that, an impressive show! Collapse

I was there on opening night and loved every moment of it. Strong casting, great singing, good orchestra, nice set and costumes. I have seen the show on other occasions and I had forgotten how funny it was. This production certainly matches the recent presentations of Hillbarn, South Valley, and SDG.A few muffed lines will certainly be corrected in future performances were the only flaws. It only plays this weekend so try to catch it. It probably will not be around again for awhile. Collapse

Lyric Theater has done a wonderful job bringing this show to life. It's quite an amazing work of musical theater, as the play manages to be funny, tuneful, touching and educational all at the same time. The roles are are well-cast and the actors give some fine performances, including a group of men playing the Continental Congress who each have unique personalities on stage. Particularly noteworthy were the hard-working Damian Marhefka (John Adams), sweet-voiced Mary Melnick (Abigail) and strong character actor Jay Steele (John Dickinson). Michael Taylor leads a skilled orchestra, and the sets and costumes are richly detailed. I highly recommend this masterful production as a musical that is as intelligent as it is entertaining.
