Royal events inspire composers to glorious heights. In Mozart's Coronation Mass that means high-energy choruses, gorgeous melodies, and resounding brass fanfares that invite nobility in each of us. Glories abound as the Peninsula Girls' Chorus joins Masterworks in William Walton's regal Te Deum, composed for the coronation of England's Queen Elizabeth II. Our marvelous soloists sing crowning moments of opera. Rossini's brilliant aria Non piu mesta celebrates the joyful ending of his version of the Cinderella story (La Cenerentola) sung as the heroine marries the prince. Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea closes as the title character marries the Roman Emperor Nero and they sing the very sensual duet Pur ti miro. Continuing this season's exploration of music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, we have his Five Mystical Songs - settings of poems by George Herbert that combine chorus, orchestra, and soloists in rich harmonies and arching melodies. Remarkable bass-baritone Kirk Eichelberger returns to deliver a vibrant interpretation of this beautiful work.
