An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Riding Hood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A witch...who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim's fractured fairy tale. When a baker and his wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell. Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. CMTSJ's Mainstage production of "Into the Woods" is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts in honor of American musical master, Stephen Sondheim.

I went to see my son perform today in West Side Story . . . boy, was I blown away!! This was an absolutely incredible performance and a pure joy to watch. More talent up on that stage then I could have ever imagined. The singing, the dancing and the acting was as professional as it gets. Many of these young performers are, surely, Broadway bound. Kudos to you, CMT, for producing such an incredible production. And, kudos to each and every performer on that stage Collapse

I can't believe that while they give a rate for a child ticket, nowhere on the site (after 30 minutes searching) do they say what age a child has to be! Even in the "ticket purchase FAQ" there is no mention of child ticket ages. While this does not prevent me from buying a ticket, it makes me significantly less comfortable. Collapse

More than just children's theater, these performers (ages 14 to 20+) did an outstanding job! I am so impressed with the Children's Musical Theater of San Jose, they are a truly surprising organization that deserves the highest praise. The dancing and singing was breathtaking. The artistic viewpoint of the set design was edgy and refreshing. The Montgomery Theater is a charming space that could hardly contain the incredibly positive energy of the cast and audience. It was a sold out show that I feel lucky to have seen. Quick, grab a friend and go see this performance. It will be worth every penny. Collapse

This new production is typical CMT, great choreography, wonderful costumes, nice set. Always A+ in terms of production values. And the material is great. Choreography was rock solid and the girls shined vocally; the boys not so much. My only other negative is that seeing 11-13 year olds play grownups having romances and talking about "being a woman" makes me feel icky. The RS age bracket is much more believable and enjoyable when they stick to animals or kids their own age. I felt the same way about HSM last summer--12 year olds kissing or almost kissing is truly icky, almost creepy. But snaps to CMT for pulling this gem out of mothballs, it's great to expose performers and audiences to some truly great tunes. Finally BIG snaps to the young lady that was "Baby Whatever" for Johnny One Note, she KILLED on Sat night. Collapse

A refreshing interpretation of a clasic; having read the book and actually seen the Movie version with James Cagney (last role). I never imagined a musical version being so captivating. It absorbed me completly connecting with the characters struggle every step of the way. The story grows and grows on you Ariel Buck was an inspiration, her signing captivated my heart. RaMond Thomas I know you as a gifted singer; but your true calling is acting good sir, what a way to start earnig your acting chops, what a way indeed. Andrew Ceglio the only thing that brings sadness of your performance is that I would've loved to see more of you;I ate your lovely rendition of Tateh and desperatly wanted more, congratulations. My star rating comes from the unfortunate problem the production had with the sound. Once remedied I would definetly see the show again with friends in tow. Collapse

Kevin Hauge has done it once again. All elements of this very difficult show are first class. From the lead role played by RaMond Thomas and the outstanding ensemble work, this show is a definite must see. The set design by Jim Culley lent itself to the various locations the show demands. The A/V Slides designed by Josh Miyaji were also of high quality. Other inspired perfomances were Mark Martinez as Father, Ariel Buck as Mother,Andrew Ceglio as Tatah. Ian Leonard as Younger Brother, and Malinda Derouen as Sarah. One of the highlights of the evening was the dancing of Keith Banks and Tiffany Glenn who did a Pas De Deus in the second act. Broadway could not have done it better. But again the major kudos belong to director Kevin Hauge who was the director and choreographer. And he did this all in five weeks. The only complaint was that there were major sound problems which will be cleaned up during the run that plays until April 27. Again don't miss this exciting production Collapse
