From the forest murmurs of its opening to the triumphant blaze of its final pages, Mahler's First is one of music's most stunning symphonic debuts. L'Ascension is a heavenward journey, led by Messiaen's foremost living interpreter, Myung-Whun Chung. Don't miss his first appearance here in 25 years.

I didn't attend the Thu concert however I did attend the Fri concert. The episode of the repeated measures in the Mahler from Thursday's concert was discussed in great detail among concertgoers. Being an orchestral musician myself, I find it appalling that a conductor would subject his orchestra to repeating a section in a concert, regardless of how disturbing the train wreck was. It would have been much more sophisticated to just go on. In the Jan 25 concert, there was a significant amount of uncertainty in the musicians' responses to Chung's conducting, as a matter of fact they seemed to perform better when they ignored him. Watching Chung's conducting style, I was amazed that the orchestra came in together at all! While Chung may be considered a genius by some, he would also be considered a very difficult conductor to play under by the folks who deserve recognizable directions and gestures. I laud the orchestra for doing so well, exhibiting grace under pressure. Collapse
