Add Review/CommentThe art of Ken Matsumoto is infused with time. While on one level this can be interpreted in a prosaic sense, indicating that the consummate craftsmanship with which the artist executes his work requires patience, tenacity, skill, and an attention to detail that can only be fulfilled with much time devoted to the creation of the work, this is not the sense in which we refer to Matsumoto's art. Time is an integral component in the ideas supporting the artist's vision. The presence of time, metaphorically, in the work of Ken Matsumoto adds to the poetry of his art. Visually the artist renders a conception of the passage of time through the iconographic metaphors of archaeology. Matsumoto's stone, steel, glass, and sometimes brick sculptures capture the essence of artifacts discovered reflecting ages long past. Stone bowl forms appear mostly intact, fractures and unfinished surfaces are exposed to reveal what appears to be remnants of turmoil or the elements survived...at least in part.
