Honk! The Ugly Duckling Musical

StarStruck Theatre presents HONK! Honk! is a tasty treat that is hip and cool, and even though it was maybe suggested by Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling", there won't be an animal costume in sight! Instead, this tuneful romp features bright wordplay and hilarious insights into parenting. It is about a lost duckling's incredible journey home. Along the way, he finds the beauty that lies within himself...and a path into our hearts. With colorful designs, Honk! reminds us that being different isn't necessarily bad - although it isn't always easy!

Directed by Lori Stokes, StarStruck's production of 42nd Street borders on perfection. I have never been so impressed with a youth theater production. I had to keep reminding myself that I was watching children and not seasoned professionals. At one point in the show, a character exclaims "Kids can do anything!" These youth provide a strong testament to that statement.

I have seen many musical theatre productions before. This one is the best. It's the most amazing production in the bay area. Nothing can compare to it. It's so professionally done. The show should go to New York!! In fact it's better than the shows in New York. Wow! Wow! I Loved It! Hats off to the Director Lori Stokes, The Orchestra Director Nancy Godfrey and the Choreographers Becky Peretti and Jeanne Batacan-Harper. I've already bought tickets to go again. It's a must see! In the beginning of the first song, the curtain is raised about 2-3 feet high so that only those dancing feet are what you see, then minutes you see the outstanding cast tapping their hearts out. I say bravo to the director and the choreographer (s), I see they had two. The orchestra was on pitch, I am certainly going back! The costumes are beautiful, colorful, classy, a bow to the costume designer. There are so many favorite moments in this show that I really can't pin point one. I can say the unforgetable characters are Julian Marsh, Peggy Sawyer-what a tapper!, Dorothy Brock-when she sang "I only have eyes for you" it brought a tear to my eye and Maggie Jones-Hilarious! she hit her lines like a professional comedian. My hat off to the director, conductor, and the choreographers! Look forward to your next show. I just became a fan. Collapse

Unless you are willing to travel to the East side of the Hudson, you are not likely to find a more entertaining show than StarStruck's "42nd Street". This is a show about young and talented musical theatre aspirants performed by a young and extremely talented cast ably supported by a fine orchestra directed by Nancy Godfried. "42nd Street" is remembered for its tuneful songs and awesome ensemble dance numbers. The young adults from Starstruck deliver both with enthusiatic expertise. My thanks go to Director Lori Stokes and Choreographers Becky Peretti and Jeanne Batacan-Harper for a most enjoyable evening. Collapse

Such a nice production of a good show. Director Lori Stokes has done it again. Her cast of forty-five all seem to be having such a good time with outstanding performances from Belle, Lumiere, and Mrs. Potts. They are as good as it gets. All so very polished and all so very young. Plus the outside setting is perfect for this show. Ms. Stokes has used her area well with the thrust stage in front covering the set changes. The transition scenes are especially nice as is the BE OUR GUEST number. Only one more weekend to see this good show. Collapse

...in fact, probably since I saw Starstruck's production of "Frog and Toad". Everything about the shows of this organization is simply wonder-full. The talent onstage -- from the sets to the costumes to the performers themselves is simply terrific -- so enjoyable to watch and be a part of. As an audience member I get to be a kid again -- at Peter Pan I clapped for Tinkerbell and hissed at Captain Hook, it was great fun. Do yourself a huge favor and plan a trip to Fremont in August to catch Starstruck's Beauty and the Beast -- it'll be one of the best nights of your summer! Collapse

It doesnt matter how many times you see it - at DisneyWorld or Great America - or in the movies. There is something about flying illusions that just takes your breath away. Starstruck's entire production does that. From the second you walk in and see that enormous map of Neverland waiting to let you in, to the adventure itself, the music, the dancing, the singing, the acting, to curtain call...supported by these magnificent sets. It's almost impossible to think that this was a children's production. Some of the actors were adults (Captain Hook/Mrs Darling), but the stars of this show were definitely the young performers and not because they were cute. This was serious theatre, good theatre. It was evident that the director and creative team really trusted their young cast to handle the show. An incredible accomplishment. I will surely be back for Beauty and the Beast. KUDOS to all, especially Julianne Godfrey as Peter Pan. Handled herself like a pro. Charming, witty, powerful. Collapse
