Spring has sprung, time for the arrival of the daffodils, and a few good films about the natural beauty of our California coastline.
Coastside Film Scoiety's feature this month is A Seal's Life by the Santa Cruz-based filmmaker Drew Wharton. This film follows the migration of one the world's largest carnivores, the great Northern Elephant Seal. As most of you know, one of the favorite haunts of these mighty beasts is just south of Half Moon Bay on the beaches of Año Nuevo State Reserve. That's where Drew Wharton captured much of the footage of bulls battling for harems and of pups taking their first dip in the mighty Pacific Ocean.
The following two shorts come out of a collaboration between composer George Roumanis and photographer Lou Solitske, both of Half Moon Bay. Symphonic Meditations features Lou's wonderful photographs of Coastside natural treasures, and Dale Underwood's magnificent alto saxophone rendition of one of George's great jazz compositions. All three films are family friendly, but kids will especially love Ragtime Dogs, George and Lou's short celebration of our Coastside canine friends.
