Feast your ears on the world-premiere opera based on the complete works of American poet Emily Dickinson. Lesley Dill, Montalvo artist-in-residence, redirects the classic form of opera to celebrate and investigate American Transcendentalism, a school of thought particularly prevalent in mid-19th century New England. Large projections on a back screen and multiple scrims provide a haunting visual element. Divide Light premieres at Montalvo Arts Center under the musical direction of Daniel Hughes. The performance features the Del Sol String Quartet; The Choral Project; Jennifer Goltz, Soprano; Kathleen Moss, Mezzo Soprano; and Andrew Eisenmann, Baritone. Divide Light was commissioned by Montalvo.

Lesley Dill is a visual artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her work encompasses printmaking, sculpture, drawing, painting, photography, language and performance art and deals with the themes of community, spirituality and the creation of an artistic voice in the early 21st century. Language as an instrument of perfect paradox, a medium of both exposure and concealment, has been Lesley Dill's subject for many years. In particular she has drawn inspiration from the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

This was such an awesome show. Too bad it only had the one performance. Singers, musicians, costumes, video ... all of it made for an outstanding, spectacular performance.
