Review/Comment
Nominated for ten Tony Awards, this hilarious but heartbreaking Broadway hit chronicles the fall of American royalty: Jacqueline Kennedy’s notorious relatives, Edith and Edie Bouvier Beale. In a scandalously beguiling musical about love, loss, and eccentricity at the heights of society, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright chronicles their journey from giddy fortune in the ’40s to seclusion in the ’70s, a bittersweet saga of roads not taken and dreams left unfulfilled. Book by Doug Wright. Music by Scott Frankel. Lyrics by Michael Korie. Based on the film Grey Gardens by David Maysles, Albert Maysles, Ellen Hovde, Muffie Meyer, and Susan Froemke.

I just saw "Long Story Short" performed in Pittsburgh in its premiere and loved it! As cliche as this will sound, I laughed, I cried, and everything in between during this show. It takes you through highs and lows of the characters' lives and truly invloves you for the entire show. Plus, the music is wonderfully written and not the standard kind of music you hear in more traditional musicals. It holds your interest and helps to tell the story rather than just being "filler." I am a musician, but I had to drag my husband to see this show because he usually doesn't like the theater and knows nothing about music, but even he was pleasantly surprised and has since been telling people how much he liked it. Seeing this has made me want to see and hear other things written by Milburn & Vigoda! Collapse

Have seen the play two yeas ago in NYC, and found the Theatreworks production dissapointing. Directing wise, it lost the impartiality of the original script and was too much in favor of father Flynn, with Sister Aloysius presented almost as a parody. Acting wise, Sister James was ok, Father Flynn good but injected unneccary sense of humor, and Sister Aloysius mediocare - especially in the last scene where her breakdown was too rapid and lost any chance of looking realistic Collapse

Beyond a doubt, a true Summer 08 hit. Once again, Robert Kelley has directed a beautifully-crafted, Pulitzer-Prize winning piece that has one basic plot--a priest's relation with one of his male students--and weaves at least 12 different issues from that. Excellent characterizations--particularly Tamiyka White, for her 15 minute star-turn as a concerned mother and Kimberly King as the strong, unbending Sister Aloysius Beauvier. A short, 90-minute production that will leave you pondering the moral issues for days to come. Now say three hail Marys and get to Theatreworks! Collapse

There wasn't a lot of depth to the story but it was a very entertaining evening and I would recommend it to everyone.

I incorrectly noted the lead as Allison Blackwell. Please correct to C. Kelly Wright in my recent submittal. Thanks.

This amuzing song-filled musical and sometimes comedy/sometimes drama is about a maid in the 1960's and the family she works for. The storyline drags a bit in the first act, but the energetic songs fill the void. The strong cast has all-around excellent singing and makes up for the light plot, with an extra nod to Allison Blackwell in the lead role, Julian Hornik, and Valisia LeKae. Some of the lyrics can be a bit corny or downright silly at times, but it all somehow fits into the style of the play. Collapse

I just left this play and I am giving the play a 5 even though the actress had to be prompted a couple of times. To stand before a crowd for over an hour and 40 minutes and tell the story of the remarkable life of Golda with emotion and only need prompted a couple of times is remarkable. She peaked my interest in who Golda was to the point I am at home at 10:30 pm researching on the internet shows she made an impression. You should definately see this play that officially opens this Saturday! Collapse
