An eye-opening, behind-the-scenes look at the brutal competition, dangerous training regimes, intense parental pressure, and pervasive win-at-all-costs attitude of professional gymnastics

This August, as we turn our focus to Beijing, China, for the 2008 Olympics, most of us will be watching the women’s gymnastics competition—the most popular sport in the Summer Games. From the precise floor routines to the daring beam performances, gymnastics showcases a world of grace, agility, and raw athletic talent. But behind the big smiles and arched backs of these young gymnasts is a different reality—one you don’t see unless you’re right in the middle of it.

Former national gymnastics champion Jennifer Sey takes us into the heart of the world of gymnastics. She writes honestly about her own life-long dream of competing at the world level, and how eating disorders, injuries, coaching abuses, parental hopes and neglect destroy young gymnasts—and nearly destroyed her. As she retraces her life, from her first gymnastics class at 6 years-old to the pinnacle of her career as the 1986 United States national champion, Sey deftly illustrates how the line between healthy ambition and the obsessive quest for perfection can quickly become blurred.
