Recognized as one of the most prominent California landscape artists, Gregory Kondos is known for his bold, modernist landscape paintings, brightly lit canvases, and cobalt blue skies. He paints large areas of solid color and flowing streams of color into vivid, diverse terrain. Kondos has won numerous prizes for his paintings, drawings, and prints. He has works in many permanent collections at prestigious museums, including the Yosemite Museum, where he has been a member of the Artist-in-Residence Program since 1989. He has also held solo exhibitions at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento. In 1995 Kondos was voted into the National Academy of Design, which includes architects, sculptors, and painters.
He later received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from the California State University at Sacramento. He became a professor at Sacramento City College, where he taught for 27 years. With his friend and fellow artist Wayne Thiebaud, he founded and directed the campus gallery that now bears his name. Mr. Kondos also founded the Artists Cooperative Gallery (now the Artists Contemporary Gallery), one of the earliest showcases for aspiring artists in Northern California.
Gregory Kondos paints the colors that he perceives in his environment. In his paintings you might see the tranquil rivers and vineyards of Northern California, or the dramatic rock formations of Santa Fe, New Mexico. You might see the serene beaches of Monterey Bay, the churches and shores of his beloved ancestral Greece, or the fields and farmhouses in Midi-Pyrenees, France.
Kondos paints with determined passion and continues to travel to interpret the lonely, solitary aspects of the world’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
