Greek Spring Festival

Protomayia, a Feast of Flowers is an annual celebration in Greece dating back to ancient times. Held on May 1, a national holiday in Greece, this celebration of spring traditionally finds families picnicking in the countryside, picking the season’s first blooms of wild flowers. The flowers are woven into beautiful wreaths and taken home to adorn front doors until August 29, where during another festival commemorating the Feast of St. John, they are burned in giant bonfires.  The Hellenic Heritage Institute (HHI) will be celebrating this cultural event and which will feature Greek food, pastries, live music and dancing. Gifts and flowers can be found in the “agora”, a Greek marketplace, and for the children, there will be “Karagiozi”, the famous Greek shadow theatre.
