This Tony Award winning musical premiered on Broadway in 1991, and is the work of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Marsha Norman and Grammy Award winning musician Lucy Simon. Based on the beloved children's classic by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published in 1911, The Secret Garden captures the beauty and magic of the original story. Mary Lennox, orphaned while living in India, is sent to England to live with her Uncle Archibald at his estate on the mysterious Yorkshire moors. Mary finds the key to an enclosed garden which has been neglected for years. Her discovery also unlocks secrets about the family of Misselthwaite Manor. With care and nurturing, Mary's secret garden becomes a magical paradise in which a family rediscovers joy, love and life. Featuring spectacular sets, costumes, and special effects, fabulous music and breathtaking performances, The Secret Garden promises to be a highlight of Theatre in the Mountains 2008 season.

Theatre in the Mountains' Secret Garden is a lovely production. A touching story appropriate for the whole family, it features a very talented cast including some of the Bay Area's most notable performers. Tim Reynolds as Archibald and Barbara Reynolds as Lily, are a pleasure to see and hear. Greg Ferrar's strong portrayal of Dr. Craven adds yet another dimension to the story. Colette Phelps and Justin Torres as Martha and Dickon add a touch of humor and character (watch for a show stopping rendition of "Hold On" from Phelps in the second act). Don't miss this. The mountain setting is beautiful and the show is well worth the reasonable price. Collapse

This show was very enjoyable. The adult leads are fantastic and bring a true professionalism to the cast. "Lily's Eyes" gave me chills and it seemed to move the entire audience based on their reaction. The children are not as 'polished', but still fun to watch and are all participants in Theatre in the Mountains "Stars To Be" productions. One of the great aspects of this play is the mountain COMMUNITY involvement. The majority of the staff and crew are all volunteers who succeed in bringing live enjoyable theatre to the mountain. A great alternative for local residents instead of driving down the hill and worth the effort to drive up the hill! Collapse

Sure, it is community theater, but this show is really worth seeing, and well worth the $18.50 cost of a ticket. The music is beautiful and stirring. Natalie Jagelski is believable as the young brooding Mary Lennox. Tom Arns is masterful in the part of the widowed Captain Lennox. Watch for Colette Phelps who plays Martha. She sings beautifully and lights up the stage every time she appears. The theater serves a nice pre-show dinner so go early for a fun evening out in the mountains. Collapse

I don't think the words "spectacular" or "breathtaking" are honest representations per the promotional information: "featuring spectacular sets, costumes, special effects, fabulous music, and breathtaking performances". It was a valiant effort, but $18.50 is very steep for a production of this quality. Collapse
