It's true, the Theatre on San Pedro Square is one of my favoret theatre venues, and it's true, Measure for Measure though rarely done is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and still, go into it with those high expectations you are bound to be disappointed. Well I wasn't. The acting was awesome, the story clear and well put together and there were no over the top effects to distract from what is such a wonderfully topical play on subjects you just want to talk about afterwards for hours. WELL DONE Arclight. I really enjoyed this!!! Collapse

I consider myself a Shakespeare buff, but this production expanded--or should I say exploded--my conceptual vision of where one can take the Bard. The simplicity of the setting makes more ornate productions seem cumbersome by comparison. The words are clear and the humor is bawdy and to the point. Fiona Lawson as Isabella makes us smile and cry at the same time. Martin A. David as Lucio paints the air blue with his audacious Commedia Dell'Arte style, and Charles Remington's Pompey is comically dangerous. In fact, they are all good. The whole show is good. Collapse

Archlight's M4M is more that meets the eye. At first glance, it is a solid production with some fantastic talent. Upon further examination, audience members are dazzled with the depth and sophistication of the choices made by the cast and director. Fiona Lawson shines as an fantastically emotionally-textured Isabelle, and her would-be-suitor David Koppel (Angelo) delivers a performance that leaves the audience squirming in their seats with his intriguing interpretation. The rest of the cast is rounded out with excellent talent that adds humor to a very dark comedy. Do not miss this production of M4M. This traditional "problem play" is more relevant than ever, and the cast and artistic direction will leave you pondering the play's timely message for weeks to come. Collapse

I am still thinking about this show after having seen it Sunday. I'd not seen this particular play, but I consider myself a Shakespeare fan. This production was great. I particularly noticed the costumes and props, which reinforce the futuristic setting; this was of benefit, and did not detract from the understanding and enjoyment of the play (some productions, aiming to "update" certain aspects of these plays, confuse and distract). I'm growing accustomed to "cool" (electronic/eccentric) music being played during plays during scene changes and the like. This production featured some works of what appeared to be a local composer. I could go on, but let me end with a thought of mine: the cast probably performs because they love to do so, and I believe that far too few people turn out to view and enjoy what is, at least in the San Jose area, VERY accessible community theatre of a high caliber. Free parking and nice restaurants are all within throwing distance. Collapse

A very exciting show by an exciting new theater company! The venue was funky and interesting, with a bar in the back and tables at the seats for your drinks. The cast was dynamic and engaging, and I could understand all the Shakespearean language and the twists and turns of this complicated plot. Highly recommended! Collapse

Attending Arclight's Sunday matinee production of "Measure for Measure" was my very first experience with live Shakespeare, and it was a most enjoyable experience by far. The director's artistic handling of the story made it understandable for even a newby like myself. All the actors/actresses were wonderful, but I especially liked the character of the "Vincentio, the Duke", protrayed by Mark Jordan. His beautiful speaking voice was like listening to music. The small, intimate venue of the Theatre on San Pedro Square made this an up close and personal performance. The only things "wrong" with the show was there just wasn't enough audience there to see it! I really think this production deserves a full house every night. The hard work of these folks needs to be seen by all. I highly recommend you attend one of the remaining performances. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Collapse
