Review/Comment
The Adding Machine, a comic, expressionistic masterpiece written by Elmer Rice. Directed by Foothill Theatre Arts Instructor Tom Gough, the play follows the exploits of Mr. Zero, a hard-working, psuedo-Everyman, as he toils through his rather inconsequential existence, a nameless human cog in a vast business engine. After years of dedication to his job, he finds himself out on his ear-replaced by a machine. Mr. Zero does not take this news lightly, and his choices soon send him on a path through various stages of the afterlife to discover the true nature of his menial existence. The Adding Machine directly addresses the question of advancing technology at what cost to personal humanity. While our society is becoming more connected to each other at a staggering rate, it begs the questions what is the quality of this interfacing and is our connectivity detached and ultimately de-humanizing? This production emphasizes the relationship between man and machine.

I have to disagree with the last post. The lead actress is from England therefore has a British accent. The story is an delightful tale of a young girl and her fantasies. The cast was strong and very comfortable with one another. The dancing interludes was a great break between the scenes(gave my brain a chance to catch up!) I applaud Bergmann for such a touching love story and can't wait to tell my coworkers. Collapse

Although I expected The Enchanted to be a stage adaptation of the Disney movie, I was pleasantly surprised it was an entirely different plot. The actors portraying the main characters of the show: Isabell, Inspector, Supervisor, Mayor and Doctor provided a spiritual yet humorous look into how a small French town deals with the possibility of a Ghost (by the way, the actor performing the Ghost was very overdone--think of Keanau Reeves on crack). The ensemble maintained an upbeat energy especially during a surprising song and dance number which reveals a love of executing criminals. The simplistic set allowed us to focus on the cast and the audio/visual effects added a higher level of mystery to the show.Although the plot was a little confusing, at times, we must realize this was adapted from a French text in the early 20th century. The director was brilliant in using modern references: the internet, a cell phone.I recommend checking out this good production for a good price!! i got the tickets free through tix bay area's "free night of theater." and thank goodness i didn't pay for this. acting wasn't bad, but too bad foothill's drama dept didn't pick a better material for them to work with. it's set in france, yet all the actors have a fake british accent. very distracting. and insulting since they must have thought we won't know the difference. plus the characters are just so stupid. everyone who lives in this fake-french town seem to not be right in the head. example: girl sees a man in black looking in through her window. she (and the entire town) immediately thinks it's a ghost. how about just a pervy peeping tom? nope, must be a ghost. then a whole lynch mob is assembled to assassinate the ghost... um, isn't he's already dead? not relatable. not entertaining. not believable. half the audience left at intermission and i should have gone, too. good thing it was free or i would've felt robbed of my time AND money Collapse

We were throughly entertained from start to finish! Especially enjoyed Nicole Martin who has exceptional comedic timing! She was hilarious in Freezur Burn but was amazing as Lucifer! Julia Sachon was a riot in Dr Cain,Dr Able. Lots of laughter, some tears, these scenes kept our interest and enjoyment going from start to finish! Don't miss it! GREAT writing and entertainment! My wife and I didn't expect much coming in, but were very happy and impressed when we left. We are mainly Dylan Thomas fans, and have seen several productions of the play over the last two and a half decades --Foothill is the best yet! Language was handled very well, though with it took time to gell with the accents and get my brain into a poetry-mode. Show was profesional in all aspects. It's shows like this that make me regret not being able to be onstage with the actor, haha. Anyone in the mood for a touching and sincere show that will make you smile: Check out Foothill. :) Collapse

Most beautiful show I have seen in a long long time! This is the first show I have seen at Foothill College, and was stunned by the set, the skilled acting, and how the entire cast/director managed to turn full-on Welsh dialects, loads of imagery-filled words, and actors with multi-characters(which in other productions could be a bit drowsing) into one of the most lively, enjoyable times I have had at the theater! I can't believe I have been missing out on this theater community at Foothill! I'm sold! Collapse

In a world of war and strife, this play is a breath of fresh air. Tom Gough does a masterful job of creating the atmosphere of a simpler era. The cast is cohesive and wonderful, with performers such as (forgive me, I can't remember the actors' names) the Cherry Owens and the Pughs leading the pack. I would recommend this play highly. I was extremely pleasantly surprised at the high quality of Foothill's "Under Milk Wood". After my disappointment in the Foothill Musical production earlier this year, my high regard for the college had waned, but my faith is restored! Director Tom Gough's very capable cast pulled off this extremely challenging script with the perfect grace and lightness. The lyrical dialogue, which might easily be muddled or weighed down by its own volume, comes out as naturally and easily as conversation. Drew Moore pulls off an especially captivating performance as Captain Cat; probably the actor's best work to date. Do not miss this show--it's really quite a hidden gem, and will not disappoint.
