Portola Art Gallery presents “California Visions” pastel paintings by artist Steve Woolery of San Mateo. In his first solo exhibit at the Portola Art Gallery, Woolery has captured scenes of the central California coast and inland communities. The images are quintessential California with a strong sense of place, and he brings a classic representational approach to his paintings.

As a self-taught artist working primarily in soft pastel, Woolery is inspired by the prospect of trying to capture the grandeur of California’s incredible beauty from the coast to the Sierras, or the magnificence of dramatic skies casting dancing shadows across California’s golden hills.

“Trying to capture the essence of scenes like these is a humbling experience at best. Having the desire is a privilege and just the prospect that someone else might appreciate my effort is the reward. “
