Madame de Pompadour (pictured), favorite of King Louis XV of France, transformed a hall of Versailles into a theatre where she loved to entertain the court, performing songs written for her by the most popular composers of the day, such as Rameau, as well as ‘older’ music (by Lully for one). She was a true artist with a high, virtuosic voice, and was a fine actress. The King built Le Petit Trianon for her at Versailles, 1763-68. Jérôme Correas founded Les Paladins ensemble in 1997 to recreate such experiences as this program, which they performed at Versailles, and to revive neglected and great French and Italian baroque repertoire. In 2002 and 2006 Correas sang for the SJCMS Fauré’s song cycle La bonne chanson.
