Jeff Howe - Crowdsourcing: Why the Power of the Crowd Is Driving the Future of Business

“Crowdsourcing” has, virtually overnight, generated huge buzz, enthusiasm, and fear. It’s the application of the open-source idea to any field outside of software, taking a function performed by people in an organization, such as reporting done by journalists and R&D by scientists, for example, and, in effect, “outsourcing” it through open-air broadcast on the Internet. Crowdsourcing has already had a huge impact on big companies like Proctor & Gamble, as well as startups like Threadless.com, which rapidly became the third largest T-shirt maker in the U.S.
The fuel sparking the crowdsourcing flame is the potent combination of more highly educated people working in fields other than those in which they were trained with the greatest mechanism for distributing knowledge and information the world has ever seen: the Internet. Crowdsourcing has the potential to upset the entire applecart – the ways in which work is organized, talent is employed, research is done, and products are made and marketed.
The opportunities, problems, and threats that are the inevitable products of crowdsourcing are examined in this informative and entertaining book by Jeff Howe, a contributing editor at Wired and one of today’s most perceptive observers and analyzers of trends.

I’m an American who has lived in Marrakech for 30 years and I’m wondering what Marrakech the author is talking about? She passes off a mish-mash of foods, traditions, names and clothing from other parts of the Islamic world that have nothing to do with Morocco. There are so many factual errors—there’s no Moroccan dish called poulet au poivres rouges, no raisins in a pigeon pastilla, and no goats in the trees on the Casablanca road, to name a few—that I couldn’t help wondering if the author was going to set her story in Marrakech, why didn’t she take the trouble to get the details right? There are also many irresponsible inaccuracies in her descriptions of relations between Muslims and Christians that just add to the misunderstandings that already exist between us and the Islamic world. If you want to get an authentic look at life in Marrakech, read another book: “Zohra’s Ladder & other Moroccan Tales.” Collapse

A gripping page turning. Dubus masterfully does it again. I didn't put the book down for two days, both dreading and eager to get through the arc of the story lines. Loved it. Sad it's over
